Serengeti–Mara Ecosystem

The Great Migration is a continuous, circular journey undertaken annually by over a million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles. Driven by the search for fresh grazing and water, these herds follow seasonal rainfall patterns in a clockwise route that covers roughly 800 to 1,000 kilometers. This movement is vital to the ecosystem, as the grazing and trampling of these massive herds stimulate grass regrowth and recycle nutrients, while their presence supports a complex food web of predators. The ecosystem faces significant conservation threats, primarily driven by human population growth and land-use changes around its borders. Increased agricultural expansion, livestock grazing, and human settlements are creating hard boundaries that restrict wildlife movement and "squeeze" animals into the core of protected areas. Research indicates that this displacement has led to significant declines in wildlife numbers near the ecosystem's margins. Water security is another critical concern, particularly regarding the Mara River, which serves as a vital water source during the dry season. Proposed upstream dams, irrigation projects, and forest degradation in the river's catchment areas threaten to alter water flow and quality. These pressures, compounded by the impacts of climate change and more frequent, severe droughts, threaten to reduce the ecosystem's resilience and disrupt the migratory pathways that define this unique landscape.
