This biome, often referred to as taiga, stretches across Norway, Sweden, and Finland. It is characterized by a cool, humid climate and is dominated by Norway spruce and Scots pine, often mixed with birch. These forests are not uniform; they range from high-latitude northern zones to southern areas where temperate deciduous trees are interspersed among the conifers. The landscape is defined by its complex history of glaciation, which has shaped its current structure, including extensive peatlands, bogs, and numerous lakes.
The Scandinavian boreal forest plays a vital role in the global carbon cycle. Recent studies indicate that undisturbed primary forests store significantly more carbon than the managed, even-aged plantations that frequently replace them. Research published in 2026 found that primary forests in Sweden store 72% more carbon per acre than managed secondary forests when accounting for vegetation, deadwood, soils, and harvested wood products. When excluding harvested wood products, the difference increases to 83%. A major portion of this carbon—roughly 64% in the top meter of soil—is stored underground, a factor often overlooked in traditional forest management models.
Biodiversity in this region is adapted to the harsh, subarctic environment. While the total number of species is relatively low compared to more temperate zones, the forest supports specialized wildlife, including large mammals like moose, reindeer, brown bears, lynx, and wolverines. The structural complexity of old-growth forests, including the presence of large, decaying trees and specific lichen communities, is essential for many species. These old-growth characteristics are often lost in industrial forestry, where rotation periods of 70 to 120 years do not allow for the development of the complex habitats required by sensitive species.
Industrial forestry has profoundly transformed the Scandinavian landscape. In Sweden, for example, unprotected old-growth forests have been lost to clear-cutting at a rate of approximately 1.4% per year between 2003 and 2019. This conversion to managed, often single-species plantations, alters natural processes and reduces the ecosystem's long-term carbon storage capacity. Because the soil carbon lost through these intensive management practices is difficult to recover, researchers suggest that the preservation of remaining primary forests is a more effective climate change mitigation strategy than previously recognized.

Scandinavian Boreal Forest
The Scandinavian boreal forest is a vast, subarctic ecosystem dominated by coniferous trees that serves as a critical global carbon repository and habitat for specialized wildlife. Industrial forestry practices, however, are significantly altering these landscapes, with recent research highlighting substantial differences in carbon storage and ecological value between undisturbed old-growth stands and managed plantations.
