Pacific Northwest Coastal Forest

This ecosystem thrives in a mild, maritime climate where rainfall can range from 100 to 300 centimeters per year, often supplemented by coastal fog. These forests are dominated by coniferous species such as Douglas-fir, western hemlock, Sitka spruce, western redcedar, and, in the southern reaches, coast redwood. Unlike drier forests that depend on frequent fire, these rainforests are shaped by small-scale disturbances like wind-throw, which creates the gaps and dead wood necessary for a diverse understory of mosses, ferns, and shrubs. Old-growth stands, typically defined as being between 250 and 750 years old, provide essential habitat for specialized species. Iconic animals such as the northern spotted owl and the marbled murrelet depend on these ancient trees for nesting and survival. Additionally, the complex forest floor and large woody debris support a wide array of fungi, lichens, and amphibians, while the shaded, cool streams protected by these forests are critical for salmon and trout populations. The history of the region is deeply tied to the timber industry, which began in earnest during the 19th century. As demand for lumber grew, particularly after the California Gold Rush, logging expanded from accessible riparian areas into deeper watersheds. By the mid-20th century, industrial practices like clearcutting had significantly altered the landscape. While historical estimates suggest the Douglas-fir region once held approximately 15 million acres of old-growth forest, the Society of American Foresters has estimated that only about 5 million acres remain. Today, the legacy of this logging history, combined with road building and fire suppression, has left much of the landscape in need of restorative management. Conservation efforts now focus on protecting the remaining old-growth fragments, which are vital for carbon sequestration and maintaining the integrity of the region's distinctive biodiversity.
