Mesoamerican Reef

The reef system is a globally recognized biodiversity hotspot, home to more than 500 species of fish, over 60 species of stony coral, and 350 species of mollusks. It also provides critical habitat for marine mammals, including manatees, as well as five species of sea turtles and large aggregations of whale sharks. Beyond the coral structures, the region encompasses a complex mosaic of interconnected habitats, including mangrove forests and seagrass beds, which serve as essential nurseries for many marine species. The health of the reef is currently under significant pressure from both local and global threats. Climate change is a primary concern, as rising ocean temperatures frequently trigger coral bleaching events, which can lead to widespread coral mortality and disease. These impacts are compounded by the increased frequency and intensity of hurricanes, which physically damage the reef framework. Pollution from land-based activities poses another severe threat to the ecosystem. Runoff from agriculture, urban development, and inadequate wastewater treatment introduces excess nutrients and sediments into coastal waters. This nutrient enrichment stimulates the growth of macro-algae, which can smother corals and reduce the reef's ability to thrive. Additionally, unsustainable fishing practices and rapid, often poorly planned, coastal tourism development continue to degrade the habitats that millions of people rely on for food security and economic stability.
