The Everglades

In 1979, Everglades National Park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its outstanding universal value as a sanctuary for diverse bird and reptile populations and its role as a significant breeding ground for wading birds in North America. The site is noted for its complex biological processes, the presence of the largest mangrove ecosystem in the Western Hemisphere, and its unique position at the interface of temperate and subtropical climates. The ecosystem faces severe threats from human-driven changes, including urban and agricultural development that has reduced its original size by approximately 50 percent. Water management practices have historically disrupted natural flow patterns, leading to habitat degradation, nutrient pollution from agricultural runoff, and saltwater intrusion. These pressures, combined with the spread of invasive species and the impacts of climate change, resulted in the park being placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2010. Restoration efforts are currently centered on the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, a long-term federal and state initiative authorized in 2000. This plan includes dozens of projects designed to restore the natural quantity, quality, timing, and distribution of water throughout the region. Key components include constructing reservoirs to store and clean water, removing barriers to flow such as sections of the Tamiami Trail, and managing invasive species to improve the overall resilience of the landscape.
