Peatlands are wetlands characterized by the accumulation of partially decomposed organic matter, which occurs when waterlogged, oxygen-poor conditions prevent the normal decay of plant material. In the Cuvette Centrale, this process has been ongoing for approximately 10,600 years. Because the peat remains saturated, it acts as a massive, stable carbon sink, effectively locking away carbon that has built up over millennia.
Scientific estimates of the carbon stored in this region vary due to the challenges of measuring peat depth across such a remote and expansive area. A foundational 2017 study estimated the belowground carbon stock at 30.6 billion tons, with a 95 percent confidence interval ranging from 6.3 to 46.8 billion tons. More recent research has provided a refined estimate of 29.0 billion tons, with a 95 percent confidence interval of 26.3 to 32.2 billion tons. Regardless of the specific figure, these amounts are equivalent to several years of global fossil fuel emissions, highlighting the ecosystem's critical role in global climate stability.
Despite their importance, these peatlands face growing threats from human activity. While the region has remained largely intact due to its historical inaccessibility, it is increasingly subject to industrial interests, including logging, mining, and oil and gas exploration. The development of infrastructure, such as roads, could further increase access to these remote areas.
If these peatlands are drained or disturbed—whether through agricultural conversion, industrial development, or climate-driven changes in precipitation—the stored carbon could be released into the atmosphere. Such a release would transform the region from a vital carbon sink into a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, potentially accelerating global warming.

Cuvette Centrale Peatlands
The Cuvette Centrale peatlands are the world's largest tropical peatland complex, spanning approximately 145,500 to 167,600 square kilometers across the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This vast, waterlogged ecosystem is a globally significant carbon store, holding billions of tons of carbon that would otherwise contribute to climate change if released.
