The practice relies on deploying passive acoustic monitors, which are weatherproof, battery-powered devices capable of recording for weeks or months without human intervention. These sensors are typically attached to trees or other structures within a study area. Depending on the target species, settings such as sampling frequency and recording schedules are adjusted to optimize battery life and storage, such as focusing on dawn choruses for birds or high-frequency echolocation calls for bats. This method provides answers to critical biodiversity questions, including identifying which species inhabit a specific area and how their populations change over time. It is particularly effective for detecting elusive, nocturnal, or cryptic species that are difficult to observe through traditional visual surveys. Furthermore, by analyzing the broader soundscape—which includes biological sounds, environmental noises like rain or wind, and human-generated sounds—ecologists can evaluate the overall health of an ecosystem and the impact of human activities such as logging, poaching, or urbanization. Once the recording period ends, the collected audio data is processed using software and machine learning algorithms to identify species and patterns.
