The forest is considered Europe's last primeval lowland forest because large portions of it have remained relatively undisturbed by human activity for centuries, allowing natural ecological processes to continue uninterrupted. This continuity is largely attributed to its historical status as a protected royal hunting ground, first for the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and later for the Kings of Poland and the Tsars of Russia. This long-standing, albeit selective, protection shielded the area from the widespread deforestation and agricultural conversion that transformed most other European landscapes.
Today, the forest is a complex mosaic of protected areas, including national parks on both sides of the border and various other conservation designations. It serves as a vital habitat for thousands of species, including rare mammals like wolves, lynx, and elk, as well as a vast array of birds, fungi, and invertebrates that depend on the presence of old-growth trees and deadwood.
Conservation controversies surrounding the forest often center on the tension between active forest management and strict preservation. A major point of contention has been the management of spruce bark beetle outbreaks. Polish authorities have previously argued for logging infested trees to prevent the spread of the beetle and protect the forest, while many scientists and environmental organizations have argued that such outbreaks are a natural part of the forest's cycle and that logging causes significant damage to protected habitats.
This conflict reached a peak in 2017 when the Court of Justice of the European Union issued an injunction against increased logging in the Polish section of the forest. The court ruled that the logging operations, which were permitted by the Polish government, violated EU wildlife laws by endangering protected species and their breeding sites. The dispute highlights the ongoing challenge of managing a site that is simultaneously a protected natural heritage area and a landscape subject to complex, often conflicting, national and international regulatory frameworks.

Białowieża Forest: Europe's Last Primeval Lowland Ecosystem
The Białowieża Forest is a vast, transboundary forest complex located on the border between Poland and Belarus, recognized as one of the last and largest remaining remnants of the primeval temperate forest that once covered the European Plain. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a critical refuge for biodiversity, most notably housing the world's largest free-roaming population of European bison.
