The landscape is defined by permafrost, which is ground that has remained frozen for at least two consecutive years. This permanently frozen layer prevents deep root growth and restricts tree development, resulting in a landscape dominated by low-growing vegetation such as mosses, lichens, grasses, sedges, and dwarf shrubs. These plants have adapted to survive in a climate where the annual average temperature is below freezing and the growing season is brief.
Animal life in the tundra includes species highly adapted to harsh conditions, such as caribou, muskoxen, Arctic foxes, lemmings, and Arctic hares. Many of these animals utilize camouflage, such as changing fur color between seasons, to survive. The ecosystem also supports migratory birds and various insects that thrive during the short, productive summer months.
Climate change is significantly impacting the Arctic, with the region warming at a rate that some sources describe as nearly three times the global average, while others note it is warming four times faster. As temperatures rise, permafrost thaws, which disrupts the landscape by forming bogs and shallow lakes and releases stored carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere. This process has shifted the Arctic tundra from a long-term net carbon sink into a net source of carbon dioxide.
Warming is also driving ecological shifts, including the expansion of shrubs and grasses into areas previously dominated by other vegetation. These changes, combined with an increase in the frequency and severity of wildfires, are altering habitats and threatening the biodiversity of the region. The loss of permafrost also poses significant risks to human infrastructure, with projections indicating that a large percentage of Arctic infrastructure is located in regions vulnerable to ground subsidence and thaw-related damage.

Arctic Tundra
The Arctic tundra is a vast, treeless biome characterized by extreme cold, a short growing season, and permafrost, which acts as the foundation for its unique plant and animal communities. This fragile ecosystem is currently experiencing rapid transformation due to climate change, which is causing widespread permafrost thaw and shifting vegetation patterns.
